I killed a business this week

I killed a business this week. Zero clients. Six months of planning, positioning docs, sales playbooks, a live landing page that never booked a single one.

The math that killed it was simple. Each client needed about 4 hours of my time to deliver. Sales calls on top. I have 12 to 17 hours a week for all my projects combined.

A service business where you are the service is a job with extra steps. I already have a job.

Here is what I did instead of deleting everything. I spent one morning going through the wreckage. A client questionnaire. A report template. Call scripts. Delivery checklists. Email sequences. All of it documented, all of it good, none of it needing me attached.

So the questionnaire became a workbook. The report template became a fill-in roadmap. The delivery process became a guide. Same material, repackaged as a product that sells without my calendar.

The business failed. The work did not. Those are different things, and knowing the difference is worth more than the six months cost me.

Correction, 2026-07-28: this originally said I have 2 to 5 hours a week for all my projects combined. My measured rate is 12 to 17 hours. Fixed above.
