Your content list is probably a queue. It should be a menu.

I keep a running list of things I could write about. For most of the time I have kept it, I treated it like a queue: post the top item, cross it off, feel the small relief of one fewer thing owed. Then the list gets short, and short feels like a problem, so you start reaching for weaker ideas just to keep it fed.

That is backwards, and the fix was smaller than I expected. I stopped treating the list as something that drains.

A queue implies debt. Every item on it is a thing you owe the list, and the list is not satisfied until it is empty. That framing quietly pressures you into using an idea before it is ready, or worse, using a weak idea because a strong one has not shown up yet and the queue is getting thin.

A menu does not work that way. Nothing on a menu gets crossed off because someone ordered it once. The dish is still there tomorrow, for the next person, or the same person in a different mood. An idea you do not use this week is not rejected. It is just not this week’s idea.

Concretely, this means the same idea can produce more than one piece of content, spread out, worded differently each time. That used to feel like repeating myself. It does not read as repetition to an audience that was not there the first time, and even the people who were there rarely remember the exact wording, only the rough shape of the point. What actually reads as repetition is reusing the same sentences, not returning to the same subject.

It also means nothing on the list is ever marked done and discarded. The only thing that changes on an entry, once it gets used, is a small note recording where. The idea itself stays exactly where it was, available again.

The practical effect: the pressure that used to build every time the list got short is just gone. A short list used to mean I was about to run out of things to say. Now it means exactly what it says, a shorter menu today, with nothing lost and nothing rushed to fill the gap.

If your content list feels like a chore you are behind on, check whether you built a queue by accident. The fix is not generating more ideas faster. It is changing what “unused” means on the list you already have.
